The recent death of a baby in Houston (Texas, USA) was due to microcephaly associated with Zika virus, health officials said.
Little died shortly after birth, becoming the first victim of the Zika virus in Texas, confirmed the State Commissioner of Health Services, John Hellerstedt.
The boy's mother had traveled to Latin America while pregnant and suspected that was when he caught the virus.
Tests conducted by doctors have confirmed that the baby was suffering from microcephaly associated with the disease of the mother.
In Texas, authorities have reported nearly one hundred cases of zika, including two babies with microcephaly in Harris County, in all cases acquired abroad.
Nevertheless, the Texas authorities are on alert for the possibility that the mosquito that transmits the disease may arise in this southern state in the country, as has happened in Florida.
In U.S.A. and its territories have been detected more than 6,400 cases of zika, but the first cases of infection on the US mainland have occurred in Florida, where already reported 16 indigenous cases. EFE
