Zaruma, the land of Dorado and coffee


The orense city becomes an alternative to visit on this vacation

That Zaruma is a slice of heaven say the locals and have more than one reason for sure. Sunrise in the city known as the Sultana of El Oro and clouds surrounding giving the impression to fly.


The smell of coffee and ocelot wraps the colonial town while a few meters, hundreds of miners are preparing to extract gold from the best law.

In Zaruma locals want the visitor feel at home, so we invite you to take a coffee and ocelot in the oldest Canton Cafe Uno, installed in a traditional corner to no more than 200 meters from the cantonal center and facing an artificial mine where the monument to the miner.
The taxi service has been trained in tourism, drivers are friendly people who will lead for $ 1.50 to mine the Sexmo, a place which has continued to sprout gold for more than five centuries ago.
"Legends say that gold came here for the rescue of Atahualpa, but was hidden by the chief Quinara to learn that the Inca had been killed," says Francisco Asanza, one of the locals.
Once in the Sexmo tourists can become a miner. Admission to the exhibition is free and in addition to stroll through a mining museum, the guides will allow you to experience wear boots, helmet, take a flashlight and go into a mine more than 500 meters deep.
The mine still has gold but the company BIRA, by place award, has decided to give this space tourism. The tour is done with a guide and lasts about 45 minutes.

 Heritage
The sunset gives a special color to the historic town of Zaruma, a city that is a candidate for Cultural Heritage. The cake of their houses, flowered balconies, lanterns and antique clocks colors light up the streets from 17:00 again wrapped in the aroma of coffee: it is time the "little coffee" in the afternoon.
The shops in the area offer ground and roasted coffee traditionally harvested in the highlands and considered one of the best in the world.
A few meters from the shops, some hidden steps leading to the Church of El Carmen, a building dating from 1913 and whose wooden dome is the symbol of the city. Next to the church the Plaza de la Independencia, a colonial park with animal figures and children hide in their pools it stands.
The architectural frame Zaruma has no fixed pattern, the city grew on the mountain becoming a labyrinth in which the lost orchids, viewpoints and heritage stairways are discovered.

Just outside Zaruma Cerro de Arcos, an area with a special magnetism that makes compasses lose the north and on which countless legends are woven rises.
You can also reach the hacienda of "Doña Cleme" where tourists can make your own peanut ground, or making traditional sweets with their hands.
The products harvested on the farm are attributed medicinal properties. Not surprisingly Clemencia Aguilar, "Doña Cleme" lived to 115 years in this place as Celso Aguilar has his grandson, who at 60 years says not having any ailment.
